How to Make a Roman Type Tier Shade

    • 1). Measure the window's height and width. Add 4 inches to the width and 8 1/2 inches to the length to determine the amount of fabric you need.

    • 2). Cut decorative fabric and lining to the length and width measurements. Place decorative fabric face down. Fold over and iron a 2-inch hem around the edges. Repeat with the lining fabric, but with a 3-inch hem.

    • 3). Place the lining, face up, on top of the decorative fabric so both right sides face out. Align the fabrics along their top edges. Pin and sew them together along the lining's edge. Don't try to align the sides; the lining is smaller to help keep it hidden.

    • 4). Cut three strips of Roman shade ring tape to the length of the shade. Roman shade ring tape is heavy fabric with plastic or metal rings attached at regular intervals. Pin and sew the tape along the left and right sides of the back the shade with rings facing out. Sew the third piece of tape top to the bottom at the center.

    • 5). Cut the blanket binding and dowel rod 1/2 inch shorter than the width of the shade. Pin binding across the bottom edge of the lining side of the shade. Sew the top and bottom edges of the binding to form a hollow casing. Slide dowel into the casing.

    • 6). Cut the 1-inch-by-2-inch wood strip with a hand saw to the width of the shade. Place it across the lining side of the shade near the top edge. Fold the top edge of the fabric over the wood strip, covering it, and staple the fabric to the wood. Insert three eye screws, small metal loops with a screw on one side, into the bottom edge of the wood at the left, middle and right sides aligned with the rings below.

    • 7). Cut three pieces of blind cord to triple the length of the shade. Tie one cord to each of the rings at the bottom of the shade. Feed each cord through the rings above it, including the eye hooks. Slip the left and middle cords through the eye hooks to their right until all cords are fed through the right eye hook.

    • 8). Spread the shade flat to extend cords evenly. Knot cords together 2 inches past the right eye hook. Trim them to matching lengths and tie another knot at the end.
