If you're thinking of remodeling or redecorating your kitchen, you may want to consider decorating with a certain theme. This theme may be color- or geographically based, or you can even choose a favorite hobby, animal or era to incorporate. If you don't want to completely redecorate in a certain theme, consider using themed accent pieces throughout your kitchen. - For a bright, fun and playful kitchen, consider incorporating a color favorite: pink. Look for vintage pink appliances or simply apply a soft blush coat to the walls. Consider accenting the pink with white or neutral-colored countertops and cabinets. You might also consider using a deep magenta or pink-based red. Feel free to add contrasting color accents in yellow, red or even pale blue. They'll add variety and texture to your cotton candy kitchen.
- The light colors and natural wood finishes associated with a coastal style can create an airy and inviting kitchen space. While it's easy to overdo a beach theme, adding a few seaside elements can imbue a space with a nautical look. For this theme, use light, natural hues on walls, cabinets and countertops. Also consider natural wood finishes for the floor, cabinets and furniture. Accent with small amounts of metal (in the refrigerator or cabinet fixtures, for example) to create a balance of natural and inviting and sleek and modern. Also, consider adding splashes of green or aqua in accent pieces like canisters, decorative plates, overhead lamps or floating shelves.
- If you want a utilitarian kitchen with a down-home feel, consider decorating in a farmhouse theme. Add a large kitchen island or remodel the counters with unfinished wood to recreate the large, open rustic feel found in a farmhouse. Instead of adding cabinets underneath the cooking island, leave some of that space open for the visible storage of metal bar stools, copper or cast iron pots, or clay or porcelain dinnerware. Consider using unfinished planked floors and a vintage steel sink or wash basin. Add elements from your local landscape with dried floral bouquets or simple branch cuttings in vases.
- If there's a certain animal you like, consider incorporating images of that animal into your kitchen, or decorating with several different animals. You can find a variety of decorative plates that feature sparrows, owls, reptiles and other wildlife. Use a cloth tablecloth featuring an animal print or purchase interestingly shaped salt and pepper shakers, such as those in the shape of roosters. You may even add a wall decal of your featured animal's silhouette. These come in a variety of style and sizes. Also look for animal designs in serving trays and dinnerware.
