Free Directions to Make a Bedspread

    • 1). Measure the length and width of the bed. Place the edge of the measuring tape at the bottom of the bed. Measure along the bed, over the pillows and down to the bottom of the mattress at the top of the bed. This equals the length. For the width, measure from the floor at the side of the bed, over the pillows on the mattress and down to the floor at the other side of the bed.

    • 2). Trace the length and width measurements onto a large sheet of fabric. If you would like the bedspread to reach the floor at the bottom and sides of the bed, add an additional 2 inches to each measurement.

    • 3). Cut out the traced rectangle. Use the piece as a template to cut out a cotton liner.

    • 4). Lay the fabric template on a flat surface and place the lining on top. The good sides of the fabric should be facing inward.

    • 5). Pin the two sides and the bottom of the fabrics together. Sew the edges together using a zigzag stitch on the sewing machine, approximately 1 inch away from the edges. You can sew the bedspread by hand if you would like. Use a tight, straight stitch along three edges and then double-back over the same seam with another straight stitch to reinforce the seams.

    • 6). Reach inside the open end and invert the blanket.

    • 7). Fold 1/2 inch of the rough edges inward and pin the smooth top edges of the fabric together. Use a blanket stitch or a whipstitch to sew the edges together.

    • 8). Add a decorative trim. You can add a ribbon edge to the bedspread by cutting 4 pieces of 4 inch wide ribbon. Cut 1 for each side of the bedspread. Wrap the ribbon around the edges of the bedspread, so that approximately 2 inches of the ribbon are on each side of the bedspread. Pin the ribbon in place.

    • 9). Cut off the overlapping ribbon at the corners of the bedspread. Sew the ribbon to the bedspread with a tight, straight stitch along the edges of the ribbon.
