Long Distance Learning for Golf Course Design
- While there are no distance-learning programs that focus exclusively on golf course design, interested students can find several accredited landscape architect programs that offer the tools needed to get started on a career in golf course architecture.
In 2009, three programs offer accredited online programs in landscape architecture. Texas Tech University offers a horticultural landscape management certificate, Curtin University offers a land-care certificate and Edinburgh College of Art offers online master's and doctoral degrees in landscape architecture.
Talk to representatives of these programs to determine which is the best for your interest. Consider whether any teachers in the program specialize in golf course design, what types of internships or field work opportunities are required and which program's electives are most in line with your interests. Fees, admissions policies and required coursework are different for each program. New programs are likely to be offered in the future because distance education opportunities are growing rapidly. - Interpersonal contact is necessary for golf course designers, who will need to know how to present plans to clients, how to network with potential clients and how to interact with construction crews, staff members, landscapers and other personnel critical to constructing a golf course. Online education will not afford students the face time necessary to develop these skills.
While internships in the field are a great idea for online learners, some schools may not make them requirements for graduation. To gain experience planning, drafting and overseeing a crew, students should seek paid or unpaid internships with organizations in their area so that they aren't at a disadvantage compared with traditional students. Long-distance learners can receive help from the career services center at their university or even from faculty members. - While internships are critical for aspiring golf course architects, students need to network with other golf course designers in their area. All students should review the American Society of Golf Course Architects, or ASGCA, website, which is linked below. The ASGCA provides member profiles and is searchable by location. Students can find successful course designers in their geographic area and may wish to approach these designers for in internship or mentoring advice. Additionally, students may find suggestions for getting started by talking to successful architects, professors at their school and internship supervisors. Students should be open to a range of job opportunities to gain experience in the landscape architect field before specializing in golf course design.
