How to Remove an Oil Stain on a Concrete Garage Floor

Remove a Fresh Oil Stain From Concrete

    • 1). Blot an oil spill with paper towels or rags immediately to remove excess oil. To avoid getting oil on your hands, wear gloves while removing oil stains.

    • 2). Wet the oil-stained surface with the water hose. Pour some dish detergent on the stain and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes.

    • 3). Pour hot water over the dish detergent and begin to scrub away the stain from the concrete with the brush. Rinse off the soapy residue with the water hose. This method is useful for a fresh oil stain on a concrete floor.

Remove a Persistent Oil Stain on Concrete

    • 1). Spread a thick layer of fresh kitty litter over the oil stain. Allow it to remain on the oil spot for at least a day, sweep up the litter with the broom, place it into the garbage bag, and dispose of it in a garbage can. The litter should absorb most of the oil. Alternatively, use sawdust to absorb the oil.

    • 2). Wet the stained concrete with the hose.

    • 3). Combine ½ cup TSP with ½ gallon of hot water in the bucket. Pour the solution over the oil spot and leave it on for approximately 20 minutes.

    • 4). Scrub the stain with the brush and rinse off the solution with clean water. If the stain is persistent or old, repeat the procedure described in Step 2 through Step 4 or use the stain removal method in Step 5.

    • 5). Apply a heavy coating of an oven cleaner spray to the old stain. Let the cleaner sit on the stained surface for about 20 minutes, scrub the area with a brush, and wait another 20 minutes before rinsing off the cleaner with a hose.
