Designing around the 5 senses

Materials and colors provide visual stimulation for the brain. It also adds to the physical vibe you feel in the room. Most people believe painting a wall is as far as their "design capacity" can take them, but in reality it's easier than one may think. All you need is an open mind, and an imaginary paintbrush and canvas.

"I want the room to feel soothing and relaxing."

Ok, so go with a serene light blue, and earth tones: green, beige, cream, and browns. With your newly painted light blue wall, you can also change the flooring if in the budget. Let's choose dark wenge wood flooring. Don't be afraid to choose a bold color. The dark wood flooring helps in the soothing and relaxing atmosphere. Add a cream shag rug, and now you have combined two colors and textures to the room. Visually, the color combinations mix well, and the feel of the wood and shag area carpet under your feet will also affect your sense of touch.

Now what is soothing and relaxing when it comes to furniture? A large, soft couch and lounge chair with ottoman. Beige corduroy will work nicely, as well as nice brown leather. Leather can be associated with masculinity, and adds an extra earthy element.

Start placing some end tables, and accessorize: pillows, blankets, picture frames, and that antique gadget you have in that box in the closet. Any accessory is a good accessory when customizing your space.

Then let's work on audio: stereo audio of course. Surround sound systems will enhance the visual experience when watching a movie, or simply listening to music while having cheese and wine with close friends. The music will enhance the taste and fragrance of the cheese and wine, while the comfort of the soft fabrics, warm blanket, and soothing colors will finish off your soothing and relaxing space.

Is your picture painted? Do you see your space? Can you see, feel, taste, smell, and hear your custom designed room? Great, because now you have a soothing and relaxing space, all your own, painted and styled by you. Everyone can be a designer: all it takes is a little imagination, and keep in mind those 5 senses.

Happy Designing!
