How Much Laminate Flooring Do I Need?

    Calculation

    • To determine how much laminate flooring and underlayment pad you need for a project, measure the length and width of each room. Multiply the length and width to determine the square footage of the room. Remember to also measure any closets or hallways and add those measurements into the final calculation. Also consider the "waste" factor; most do-it-yourselfers need to add at least 10 percent to the total measurement to accommodate extra material needed for cuts and possible mistakes.

    Example

    • If you have a room that is 10 feet wide and 10 feet long with a 2-by-5-foot closet, a second room that is 10 feet wide and 12 feet long with a 2-by-5-foot closet and a hallway that is 3 feet wide and 5 feet long, figure your material like so:
      Room "A:" 10 x 10 = 100 square feet
      Closet "A:" 2 x 5 = 10 square feet
      Hallway: 3 x 5 = 15 square feet
      Room "B:" 10 x 12 = 120 square feet
      Closet "B" 2 x 5 = 10 square feet
      Total = 255 square feet
      Waste of 10 percent = 25 square feet

      The total amount of laminate flooring needed would be 280 square feet.
