Ways to Drain a Washing Machine

    Manual Drain Cycle

    • Many washing machines have a separate “Rinse and Drain” or “Drain Only” cycle. Turn the control dial clockwise until the dial points to a drain cycle and pull the knob out firmly to start the drain process. On washers with an electronic key control, push “Rinse and Drain” or “Drain” and touch “Start” to initiate the drain cycle. Forcing the washer into a drain cycle is most helpful when the washer did not drain because of too much soap from overuse of detergent or the wrong kind of detergent, not when the drain process is obstructed.

    Drain Hose

    • Disconnect the washing machine power and then set a bucket under the drain hose connection before attempting to force the machine to drain through the hose. Then disconnect the drain hose and set the end of the drain hose in the bucket, allowing the water to drain out. If no water drains out of the drain, check inside the drain hose for a plug that should have been removed during installation. Pull out or cut out the plug if necessary. Be aware that you might need more than one bucket to handle the volume of the water that exits the washing machine. Reconnect the drain hose to the washing machine and restore power.

    Pump Filter

    • Several newer types of washing machines have an access panel for the pump filter on the lower front of the washing machine. Remember to disconnect power first, then open the pump filter door, open the cap by turning counterclockwise, disconnect the pump filter and let the water drain into a bucket or container. Once the water is done draining, look inside the pump filter for debris or objects that might be responsible for the drain problems. Return the pump filter to its position, close the cap and close the pump filter door.

    Repair Assistance

    • If you have tried a manual drain cycle, cleaned out and drained the drain hose, and do not have a washer with an accessible pump filter or cleaning the filter did not result in clear drainage, contact a service professional for assistance. An object may be caught in the pump filter or other washing machine components that requires the washer to be taken apart to resolve, and this should be done by a professional.
