How to Eradicate Oxalis
- 1). Put on garden gloves before beginning eradication; oxalis is toxic and can cause skin irritation.
- 2). Identify the largest established clumps of oxalis. Grasp the base of the plant and pull it straight up with firm but steady pressure to pull the roots up out of the soil. If the tops of the plants break off, dig down into the soil with a hand spade to remove the bulbs as well.
- 3). Dispose of all oxalis clippings and plants by placing them into a sealed trash bag because they are toxic if consumed by pets or small children.
- 4). Fill a garden sprayer with herbicide containing triclopyr or fluroxypyr using the amount indicated on the herbicide bottle. If you do not mind killing everything, including the grass, use herbicide containing glufosinate or glyphosate.
- 5). Add a surfactant to the garden sprayer using the amount specified. Surfactants cause the herbicide to stick to the oxalis leaves better.
- 6). Dilute the herbicide mixture with water if instructed to do so and then close the sprayer and shake it to combine the contents.
- 7). Spray the herbicide mixture over the entire lawn area to kill even the smallest oxalis plants. If you are using glufosinate or glyphosate, it is best to spot treat each visible plant.
