How to Replace a Drop-in Electric Range
- 1). Turn off the circuit breaker connecting the electric range. The circuit breaker will be clearly marked inside the home electrical panel. Open the oven door and remove the racks from the old drop-in range.
- 2). Ask a friend to assist you to pull the range away from the rear wall enough so that you can access the electrical junction box. One of the rear legs on the range sits in a bracket that prevents the unit from tipping. If your unit will not slide out, push the unit back while lifting the rear of the unit. After the rear leg clears the bracket, you can pull the range out away from the rear wall.
- 3). Go behind the range and use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the screw that secures the junction box cover. The junction box will be on the wall where the range conduit attaches. Remove the cover and untwist the electrical wire caps that secure the range wires to the house electrical wires. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screw that secures the range conduit and wires to the junction box.
- 4). Pull the drop-in range completely out of the kitchen counter area with the aid of your helper. Remove the rear bracket from the range area with a Phillips-head screwdriver.
- 5). Open the door on your new electric range oven. Remove the anti-tip bracket, which is usually taped to the inside oven liner. Remove the racks from inside the oven. Close the oven door and lay the range on its back with the aid of your helper.
- 6). Attach the anti-tip bracket to the same side of the cabinet area the old bracket was located. Secure the anti-tip bracket with the retaining screws and a Phillips-head screwdriver.
- 7). Adjust all four legs on the bottom of the new drop-in range by turning the legs with an adjustable wrench. Use a tape measure to ensure that the clearance from the bottom of the leg to the bottom of the range is at least 3/16 of an inch. This clearance is necessary for the rear leg to connect into the anti-tip bracket.
- 8). Stand the range back on its feet and slide it close to the cabinet opening. Pick up the unit with assistance from your helper and place the range into its working position. Place a level across the top of the range to ensure the unit sits flat. Adjust the legs as necessary until the unit is level. Pull the range away from the wall so that you can connect the electrical wires.
- 9). Insert the wires from the range through the bottom of the house junction box and pull until the range conduit is in the clamp. Tighten the clamp around the conduit with a screwdriver.

Connect the wires from the range to the corresponding house wires using plastic wire caps to twist them together. Black wire to black wire, red to red, white to white and green or bare wire to green wire. If your home wire does not have a green or bare wire, connect the range green wire with the house and range white wires. - 11
