This is an introductory star trek online guide and should answer most of your basic queries about the game.
What is Star trek online? It is an MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role playing game) set in the Star trek universe.
The game releases on 2nd Feb, 2009 in USA and 5th Feb, 2009 in Europe.
At launch, You have ability to be a part of one of the two currently available factions, Klingon or be a part of the Federation.
Although you can be sure that more factions will come later on as the game expands.
If you are clueless about the star trek universe, Here is what you must know, most of the activity happens in space in the 25th century.
You are the in charge of your ship and you command your ship and crew and progress through the game.
Player Progression The player progression in STO is unlike other MMOs wherein grinding and leveling was paid a lot of importance.
In star trek online, you don't have 50 levels to hit from scratch.
At launch, you have a total of 6 ranks to progress.
Ensign -> Lieutenant -> Lieutenant Commander -> Commander -> Captain -> Admiral Skill based progression You start out as an Ensign in the tutorial.
You should complete Your Ensign levels in a couple of hours.
Star trek online is a skill based game, that means you will spend your time increasing the level of your skills.
This is done by completing missions and completing episodes.
You receive skill points for completing missions and episodes.
You use the skill points to improve the skills that are available to you.
For every rank, you have a set of skills that are available to you.
The skills available to you at lower ranks is broad and as you climb through the ranks, the skills become more specific, based on the skills you chose initially.
For example, if you were an Engineering officer, you could focus on Maintenance or Modification.
You could also generalize in both, just that it would take more time, suppose you choose modification and Max out your Lieutenant modification skill and once you get promoted to Lieutenant commander, you can further build on the Modification skill or you could start over and build your maintenance skills.
Your Modification skill bonuses will still remain for the remainder of your career.
So although, the game doesn't follow the conventional leveling pattern.
Maxing out all your skills will take considerable time.

Star trek online ships As you climb through your ranks, you get your self a ship that is suited to your rank.
You also have ships that play specific roles.
You have 3 types of ships to choose from, Science,Cruisers and Escorts.
To put it simply, Science ships have the ability to detect cloaking vessels and act as support ships in battle.
Cruisers are the big boys with a larger crew, larger ship, larger power and a larger inventory capacity.
In non-combat situations they become absolutely necessary for long trips.
Escorts are the little boys with big guns.
Small ships and loads of firepower.
If you like to come in all guns blazing then this is the ship for you.
There is tremendous scope for customization when it comes to ships, both from a cosmetic point of view as well as a technical gameplay view point.
