Reflections by Jill - A Weekly Commentary for OLTL for August 6, 2007

I’m going to get back to talking about the actual show next week because last Saturday was the annual One Life to Live Fan Club Luncheon here in New York and I know lots of people who weren’t able to attend want to hear about it. So, here’s my recap of the day’s events.

I have to say that I was a bit disappointed this year. The date of the luncheon was moved up to the first week of August instead of later in the month like it usually is and in addition to that, we found out that the studio is going to be dark this week so a lot of the actors who usually attend the luncheon headed off for vacation and didn’t show up.

Most of my favorites didn’t attend so it just wasn’t the same, but it was fun nonetheless and everyone was grateful to the actors who did attend for spending part of their vacations with the fans.

Things started off as usual with check-in and then everyone got a chance to walk around and check out the items of memorabilia from the show that were being raffled off. Honestly, there was very little interesting merchandise, a lot less than in previous years and it seemed like there were less fans in attendance, which I was told had to do with the date of the luncheon interfering with peoples’ vacations, etc.

After lunch and the raffling off of the memorabilia, came the part of the day everyone loves and that is when the actors make their entrance. I’ll give you the list of actors who attended by their character’s name for those of you (and sometimes me included) who don’t know their real names. The characters that attended were, Lindsay, Starr, Matthew, Cole, Amy (Brittany’s friend), Sarah, Talia, Miles, Garrett (Brittany’s friend), Marty, Renee, Cristian, Adriana, Rex, Sean (Vincent’s buddy), Roxy, Langston, Clint, Michael and Bo.

Aside for Roxy and Bo, all of my favorites were missing, like John, Natalie, Jessica, Nash, Antonio, Blair, Dorian and Nora. There were more that we all missed, but you get the picture.

Nevertheless, the actors who did show up were really fun. Catherine Hickland acted as the emcee for the afternoon and she did a wonderful job. She looked amazing and you could tell how much she appreciated the fans and enjoyed being there. She proceeded to introduce each of the actors and it was pretty funny. She started by introducing Kristen Alderson (Starr) by saying that she watched her grow up from a little girl to a young lady who now has boobies and kisses boys. Kristin took it in stride and laughed with the rest of us. Catherine then introduced Brandon Buddie (Cole) and said that if she were only 6 months younger he would be perfect for her. It was his first fan club event and when asked what he thought about it he said he was pretty scared. He was very cute and everyone loved him.

Talia was introduced and came out to a big reception from the fans and she seemed to be very happy to be there and to be on the show. Then came David Chisholm (Miles) and I have to tell you that I was very surprised because he got a huge reception from the fans. They love him like crazy. Here’s one of those cases where you want to ship the guy out of Llanview as fast as you can, but when you meet him in person he’s a lovable and sweet guy. LOL, I’d prefer my villains to be meanies in real life, too. It makes it easier to hate them on screen. I have to admit that he is a sweet guy and it seems like the fans don’t want him to go anywhere too soon. He got even more applause when it was pointed out that he was supposed to go on vacation, too, but postponed it for a day so he could attend the luncheon.

A huge reception erupted for Rex, of course. John Paul Lavoisier is always a favorite at these events because he’s got an adorable personality and is very much a little bad boy like Rex. He loves the fans and gives himself totally to the day and everyone adores him.

Another huge reception was given to Sean. (Sorry, he’s Vincent’s buddy/body guard/sidekick and I think his first name is really Sean but I can’t remember his last name.) This guy was thrilled to be there and the fans gave him a huge reception.

Then the most fun part of the day began, where the fans got to ask the actors questions. You never know what’s going to come up and it’s always hysterical. Two of the actors go into the audience with mics for the fans and although Kassie DePaiva who usually does this part of the event was very sorely missed, Christina Chambers and David Chisholm (Marty and Miles) did the honors and did a fine job. The fans seemed to teasingly say that Marty never lets Miles touch her and always says, “Don’t you touch me” so when they stepped off the stage, David grabbed Christina and planted a big old kiss right on her mouth. It was hysterical and Christina thought so too, thank goodness. I guess that satisfied anyone who figured that that’s about as close as Miles is every going to get to Marty.

There was a very cute little girl who was there with her mom and she got up on her chair to ask her question. She said it was her 8th birthday and she said, “I would like a hug from Rex.” This was one of those “awwww” moments and of course, John Paul jumped off the stage and gave the little girl a big hug and the little girl was not too keen on letting go. JP asked he if she wanted to come sit on stage with him and that’s where the lucky little girl spent the afternoon. She sat in JP’s chair and he said next to her on the floor. This was one birthday she won’t forget.

There were lots of positive comments about the high school musical and since a lot of the younger actors were there, they talked about how much fun it was to do it. Brandon Buddie (Cole) was asked if he was really singing on those shows and he said “if you can call it that.” He said he tried and everyone let him know he did a good job.

Ilene Kristen who is always one of my favorites was asked about a CD she is working on and she said it will be coming out soon but she’s still working on it. She also said she has a pretty bad case of sciatica and would welcome any suggestions on how to deal with it. She was also asked about future storylines for Roxy and she said that with the new head writer, maybe Roxy would get some love.
