When setting up a TV entertainment center, the room can quickly come to resemble a warehouse for audio and visual entertainment equipment. In addition to needing to find a space for the TV, you likely have a DVD player and perhaps a video game console or a stereo system that need to be stored as well. - The popularity of wall-mounted and flat-screen TVs has introduced a new breed of TV shelving. Since the television hangs from the wall, that leaves just the audio components to go on the shelves. Some systems feature floating shelves to store cable boxes, DVD players and audio equipment. You may opt for a low-sitting, modern console in a clean, minimalist style if you have a flat-panel TV designed to sit on a stand.
- TV stands come in a variety of shapes and sizes and work with almost any type of TV and to match any type of room decor. You can purchase stands specifically tailored to hold conventional TV screens from 10 to 80 inches, or those designed for flat-screen TVs. TV stands are traditionally made out of wood, wire, metal or glass. If you have a large number of other media devices, such as a DVD player or DVR that will be connected to the TV, purchase a TV stand with a number of shelves. Some TV stands may have wheels on them that allow you to easily move the television from room to room.
- If you have a lot of wires, choose an armoire-style cabinet with several shelves on the inside and an opening in the back for connecting cables to the TV. This will conceal the wires and make a more attractive space. Using this option, you can keep the TV stylishly hidden from view when it isn’t in use. You find TV entertainment armoires in as style and material to match the other wooden furniture in the room. If you have limited space, a TV stand with additional shelving makes a solution for storing things within a smaller footprint in the room. Corner TV stands take advantage of formerly dead space in a room and leave more space for seating.
- A wall unit makes a functional alternative to an armoire. Though similar to an armoire, the wall unit is larger and therefore better for a larger space. In addition to the space for the TV, the wall unit has shelving that can store audio and other media equipment. If you prefer to showcase your audio equipment, look for a unit that houses components behind a front door. A wall unit may also feature additional shelving that you can use for the display of decorative items in the home, such as vases and figurines. It may have display lighting on some of the shelves that you can use to spotlight special pieces of art.
