The Significance of Colors in the Indian Flag
- The orange or saffron colored stripe on the top of the flag marks the abandonment of material things. The Indian people feel their leaders should not obtain success for material gain but to simply be dedicated to their work. Showing courage and sacrifice is encouraged. It is also called the Bhagwa color, which is a Hindu symbol.
- The white stripe in the middle stands for light. It represents the honest path that guides the people to good conduct. Symbolizing peace, unity and truth, the white stripe guides the Indian people toward positivity.
- Showing the country's relationship to the Earth and the soil, the green stripe on the bottom represents the appreciation for plant life. They acknowledge it's importance for all other life to survive. The green also stands for fertility and clearly shows the Indian culture and their love for agriculture.
- The blue wheel in the center of the flag is placed on the white stripe. It represents the Ashoka Chakra that is seen on the abacus of Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka. It stands for movement and inspires peaceful change. The power to move forward and live life is signified through this symbol. It has 24 spokes for the 24 hours in a day and equals 3/4 of the width of the white band.
