How To Cut Your Own Hair With Scissors

    • 1). Shampoo and condition your hair first. Do not dry your hair afterward, as wet hair is easier to cut than dry hair. Cutting your hair when it is dry can cause split ends and your haircut can come out uneven.

    • 2). Part your hair down the middle and start combing your hair through, making sure to get out all the tangles and knots. This will help ensure a smooth and even cut.

    • 3). Determine the place you want to start your layers (the shortest pieces of your hair). Either measure this spot from the tip of your hair with a ruler or use a landmark, like your chin or shoulder.

    • 4). Section off your hair into thin even sections from the top of your scalp downward. Make sure that the parted lines of separation are perpendicular to the floor. Separate the sections with clips or hairbands, to keep sections apart from each other.

    • 5). Take one section at a time and put all the hair through your index and middle fingers. With your finger tightly together, pull your hair straight out to one side of your head. Once your hair is tightly pulled, start moving your fingers toward your ends until you reach the point where you want you layers to begin. You can comb the section of your hair outward and then grasp the ends with your two fingers again. Keep your fingers tightly together on your hair ends and make sure the hair isn't sagging.

    • 6). Take your scissors with the other hand and cut at a downward angle toward the ground. The ends of your hair should be cut at a sharp downward angle.

    • 7). Repeat step 6 with all hair sections until achieved layers are created. You should try this downward cutting motion farther from where you want to start cutting your layers.
