- 1). Mix peat moss into the top 6 inches of soil in a planting location that has full sun for the majority of the day.
- 2). Dig holes in the planting location that are deep enough for the roots to fit in with 2 inches of extra space on all sides. The holes need to be at least 1 foot apart to allow for spreading.
- 3). Cover the roots with soil and water gently, using enough water on each plant to wet the soil several inches deep.
- 4). Water lightly once a week unless high temperatures or drought occurs, then water twice weekly. Add enough water to dampen the soil 3 inches deep.
- 5). Cut the lanterns from the plant as soon as they ripen to prevent uncontrolled spreading of the plant. Dry them to use in crafts or cook the fruit.
