How to Mix Prints Like a Pro

We all know that mixing patterns is the b-all and end-all of fashion statements right now. Whether it’s spring brights or autumnal hues, a collision of patterns is the best way to turn heads no matter what the season. But have you ever been too scared to try this bold trend? Not sure how you should go about mashing polka dots with plaid? Style your ensemble like a pro with some of these handy tips…

  • Match colors, not prints. Try and keep your fabrics in the same color family or else pick out a single color that’s shared among two prints for a cohesive look.

  • Mix prints of different scales. This can be two prints of the same design, albeit in different scales, or even contrasting patterns that include both large and miniature designs. Preferably choose one print to dominate and use the smaller one as an accent.

  • Break up the look with solids. That is, a plain white tee, a simple belt or shirt tied around the waist to stop your outfit looking too busy.

  • Mix prints between different textures. Try throwing on something flowy over the top of a more structured piece or vice versa. Go crazy with tweed, tulle, wool and silk as you experiment with bold print combinations.

  • Know when to stop. Finally, this last tip comes courtesy of the inimitable Coco Chanel, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.” Wiser words have never been spoken.
