Causes

• Most nose bleeds occur when the septum, the thin layer of cartilage dividing the nostrils, dries out or is scratched. In more serious cases, nose bleeds may occur as a result of head trauma following an accident.
  
  

Types

• Nose bleeds can be categorized as either anterior or posterior. Anterior nose bleeds occur at the front of the nose and are not usually considered dangerous. Posterior nose bleeds occur at the the back of the throat and can be serious depending on the cause.
  
  

Dangers

• Most nose bleeds are not serious and will clear up on their own. However, chronic, or frequent nose bleeds can be dangerous as the amount of blood lost can cause fainting, weakness or even death.
  
  

Treatment

• Pinching the nose is a tried-and-true method of stopping an anterior nose bleed. Posterior nose bleeds may require medical attention if they occur frequently and cannot be treated at home.
  
  

Warnings

• Tilting the head back in an attempt to stop a nose bleed is extremely dangerous. The blood is forced to drain into the throat, causing choking. If you feel your nose bleeds are linked to a more serious medical condition, visit your doctor immediately.
