How to Build a Patio Grill

    • 1). Pick a spot to build a patio barbecue that is convenient and safe. It will be a permanent fixture that cannot be moved and should be located away from vegetation, fences and other flammable objects.

    • 2). Purchase a grill rack and fire pan. You will build the patio grill walls around the dimensions of the grill rack and then extend out from there to form a work surface.

    • 3). Position the grill rack on the patio and arrange a row of bricks around the left, back and right side. Extend the back row and add another wall on the right side to form the work surface. Remove the grill rack.

    • 4). Check that all the corners are square and then mark the position of the bricks by snapping chalk lines along both sides of the perimeter and inner support wall.

    • 5). Pour the cement into a large bucket and mix it with masonry sand and water as recommended by the manufacturer.

    • 6). Spread mortar between the chalk lines.

    • 7). Set two bricks ½ inch apart at each of the two back corners and work out from there. Place some mortar at the ends of each brick before setting it in place and scrap off excess with a trowel. Use a power saw to cut the bricks to fit.

    • 8). Add another course starting at the corners, making sure the bricks are spaced ½ inch and all vertical mortal joints are staggered.

    • 9). Continue adding layers of bricks, checking that the walls are plumb and even with a level.

    • 10

Insert supports for the fire pan after laying five courses. Insert bolts into the mortar before adding the sixth course. Space two bolts on the left wall and two on the inner wall projecting to the left side.

    • 11

Complete three more courses of bricks. Repeat the above step to create supports for the grill rack. Add another two bolts on the inner support wall that project to the right side that will support the paver for the work surface.

    • 12

Lay at least two more courses of bricks around the cooking area (not the back and left wall where the work surface will be).

    • 13

Cement a large paver on top of the right-hand side to create a work surface.

    • 14

Wait for the mortar to dry before sliding the fire pan onto the bottom bolts and the grill rack onto the top bolts.
