How Do I Get Pink Highlighter Out of My Carpet?
- Prep the area by blotting up as much of the stain as possible. Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over the stain, and use a damp sponge to work the baking soda into the carpet. The highlighter stain should disappear within a few moments. When the stain is gone, use a clean damp cloth to wipe away any excess highlighter or baking soda residue.
- Liquid dish detergent is a mild cleaning product that works effectively to remove stains on carpet without leaving a greasy residue behind. In a bowl, pour 1/2 cup of water, and add 3 drops of a clear, non-colored dish detergent. (Dyes in colored detergents can sometimes stain carpeting.) Mix the solution until bubbles begin to form, then pour the solution onto the stain while working it in with a cloth or soft-bristled brush. When the stain has been removed, soak a cloth in cold water, and wipe away any excess dish detergent or highlighter residue.
- For set-in stains, an at-home steam cleaning treatment may be required. A highlighter stain should be fairly small and shouldn't need a large commercial steam cleaner. Instead use your iron. Turn the iron on, set it to the steam setting, and let it heat up. Place a paper bag or white cloth over the stain, then place the iron directly onto the paper or cloth. If you have a manual steam button, press the button a few times to release a cloud of steam. This will break up any remaining residue left behind and absorb it onto the cloth or paper bag. Repeat as necessary, and the stain should disappear completely within minutes.
