How to Troubleshoot Dryers

    Not Running

    • 1). Close the dryer door completely and make sure that it catches. If the door is open on some dryers, even a little bit, the dryer may not run.

    • 2). Check the power cord to make sure it is plugged in properly and the cord is not damaged. If the cord is damaged, you will have to replace it. Dryers require a 240-volt power supply. If your outlet is not providing enough power, call an electrician to install the proper power supply.

    • 3). Press the start button. If it still does not run, a fuse may have blown or a breaker may have tripped. In most homes, there are two fuses or breakers for the dryer. Check both. Replace the fuse or reset the breaker.

    No Heat or Too Long

    • 1). Clean the lint trap and the ducting using a vacuum to remove obstructions and check for kinks in flexible ducts. Obstructions or kinks will prevent air from passing through the ducting, causing the heating element to shut off.

    • 2). Check the fuse or circuit breakers connected to the dryer and replace or reset if necessary. It is possible for only one to blow or trip, making the dryer run without heat.

    • 3). Check the power supply connected to the dryer. If you're using a 120-volt circuit the dryer will take longer to dry because it is not getting the required 240-volt power supply.

    • 4). Dry one load of laundry at a time. Overloading the dryer prolongs the drying time.

    • 5). Add items to balance out a small load. If there are too few items in the dryer, they may move to the back where they aren't tumbled properly.

    Thumps or Rattles

    • 1). Search the front and rear edges of the drum for small objects that may have fallen out of pockets.

    • 2). Check that all four feet on the bottom of your dryer are in contact with the floor. This means it is properly levelled. If they are not, adjust the feet until each touches the floor.

    • 3). Separate the clothes in the dryer. Sometimes clothes get balled up while in the wash and these will bounce around the drum while drying which can result in rattling or vibrating during the cycle.

Lint, Stains or Wrinkles on Clothes

    • 1). Clean out the lint screen and rinse it with soapy water. If the lint screen is clogged, lint cannot be removed from the dryer.

    • 2). Add dryer sheets at the start of each cycle, not to partially dried clothes. Dryer sheets will stain if added to clothes that are almost dried.

    • 3). Search pockets for items left in clothes before washing. These may not cause a problem during washing, but items like lipstick, crayon or candy will melt in the dryer and the dyes can mark all of the clothing in the load.

    • 4). Remove clothes at the end of the drying cycle. Clothes left sitting in the dryer will wrinkle.

    • 5). Separate clothes when transferring them from the washer to the dryer to prevent balling which results in wrinkled clothes. Dry smaller loads so that clothes tumble freely during drying.
