How to Sew Place Mats

    • 1). Prepare your place mat tops. You can opt for a solid piece of fabric for quick place mats or piece your place mats. You can even integrate quilt blocks you already have made into your place mats. Pieced place mats are an excellent way to use up fabric scraps.

    • 2). Press the tops of your place mats. Spray the wrong side of the fabric lightly with quilt basting adhesive and press the batting or interfacing into place. Stack the backing for your place mat on top of the interfacing.

    • 3). Baste the place mat together 1/4 inch from the edge using a long stitch length on your sewing machine. If you have used batting instead of interfacing, quilt your place mat. You can opt to quilt along piecing lines or in any pattern you prefer.

    • 4). Make sure that the edges of your place mat are even and square. You may want to check the sides and corners using a ruler or straight edge. Trim the sides if necessary.

    • 5). Attach bias binding to your place mat. You can use purchased bias or make your own binding for your place mats. Line the cut edge up to the middle of your bias tape, placing the longer edge of the tape to the underside of the place mat and the narrower edge on top of it. Pin into place and stitch close to the edge of the bias tape on the top side. Check occasionally to make sure that you are catching the backside of the tape. Overlap the ends when you have bound the entire place mat.

    • 6). Trim thread and press your place mat.
