Medical Sonography Diagnostic Schools in Washington

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities in the field of diagnostic medical sonography are expected to increase by 18 percent through 2018. The majority of diagnostic medical sonographers are employed in hospitals, working with a variety of fields, including obstetrics, neurosurgery and abdominal sonography. The state of Washington offers a variety of schools for students to pursue this degree. - Students attending Tacoma Community College have the opportunity to learn the skills required to enter the work force in as little as 21 months. Graduates earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in diagnostic medical sonography and receive intense training in the core classes required to complete the program. Courses include pathophysiology, abdominal sonography, gynecologic sonography, and physics and instrumentation. Beginning in the third quarter, students participate in one clincal practice per quarter, taking advantage of hands-on learning. As of June 2010, the tuition costs for the program are approximately $7,000. Financial aid opportunities are available.

tacomacc.edu - The Department of Diagnostic Ultrasound at Seattle University offers a Bachelor of Science in diagnostic ultrasound, with a concentration on the study of basic sciences. Students take courses in pathophysiology, diagnostic ultrasound, echocardiography, vascular evaluation and doppler, ultrasound physics, human cross-section anatomy and ultrasound Instrumentation. In addition, students participate in interactive labs and a clinical internship program before graduation. For full-time students entering the 2010-2011 academic year, tuition costs are about $30,000 annually. Seattle University has a full financial aid staff.

The A.A. degree program requires eight consecutive quarters to complete. Courses include acoustical principles, abdominal, obstetrical and gynecological sonography, vascular technology, neurosonography, intraoperative sonography and patient care skills. For the 2010-2011 academic year, tuition costs begin at approximately $1,000 per quarter for full-time students. Financial aid and payment arrangements are available.
