How to Clean Creosote From Firebox Walls in a Fireplace
- 1). Determine the level of creosote you have on your fireplace walls. Stage one is simple soot. Stage two is a porous and crunchy form. Stage three is a hard glaze. If you have stage one or two creosote, you can remove it with creosote removal spray. Stage three requires creosote removal powder.
- 2). Brush out any creosote from your walls that you can. For stages one and two, this process should remove most of the creosote from the walls. If you have stage three creosote, you won't be able to remove it with a brush.
- 3). Put some creosote removal powder onto a brush, and brush the walls of your fireplace, covering them with the powder, if you have stage three creosote. If you have stage one or two, skip this step.
- 4). Light a fire. If you have stage one or two creosote, spritz creosote remover spray five or six times into the fire. If you have stage three, do not spray; just light the fire.
- 5). Brush the walls of your fireplace after the fire has completely gone out and the fireplace has cooled down.
- 6). Repeat steps 2 through 5 daily until the creosote has been completely removed from your walls. Once the walls are clean, spray your fire with creosote remover spray every time you light it to prevent future buildup.
