How to Reposition a Live Tree
- 1). Wrap a measuring tape around the trunk to measure its diameter. Use a shovel to dig out a circle around the tree. The circle should be 2 to 4 feet deep, and 10 inches wide for each inch of diameter of the tree trunk. This will expose the roots and make repositioning the tree easier.
- 2). Wrap the trunk in a piece of furniture padding or a blanket. Place a rope around the trunk on top of the padding, so you do not damage the trunk.
- 3). Have helpers assist you in pulling the tree into the new position. Another helper should shovel soil under the roots that lift as you reposition the tree. Remove the rope but leave the padding on the trunk.
- 4). Fill the hole around the tree with soil and water until the soil settles. Insert tree stakes into the soil on either side of the tree. Attach two tree cables around the trunk, on top of the padding. Tie one cable to each stake. This will help keep the tree in the new position as it becomes re-established. Remove the cables after one year.
