Theater production involves the technical parts of putting on a play, including scenery, lighting, costumes and makeup, props, sound and stage management. Theater production grants generally provide funding for non-profit or theater organizations to launch new plays or do productions of old classics. Many grants will also provide monies for extraneous expenses. Governmental bodies or private foundations typically give out theater production grants. - The National Alliance for Musical Theatre's (NAMT) National Fund for New Musicals provides production grants to NAMT members who are within good standing and have a non-profit/tax-exempt status. These organizations must also pay artists according to musical theater guidelines. Production grants assist new productions that are ready to be shown; these must add value to the theater or attract new audiences. These grants range from $10,000 to $20,000, and the organization must match the funds on a 3:1 basis.
Expenses allowed under the grant include writer/artist fees, travel, accommodations, per diem, recordings, production costs and orchestra fees. Theaters may apply under one of three application categories: sole applicant (one applying for the grant), Lead Applicant (representative for a consortium application) or consortium member. There are three grant categories: Early Collaboration, Project Development (projects already started) or Production. You may only submit only one application per year in the sole or Lead Applicant category.
