How to Care for Rough, Dry Feet

    • 1). Smooth hardened skin with a double-sided foot file. Foot files can be found in most drug stores and are usually inexpensive. Start by running the coarse side of the foot file lengthwise against the bottom of the foot. Pay special attention to heels and callused spots. Rub the file up and down along hardened areas, applying as much pressure as is comfortable until problem areas are softened.

    • 2). Use the fine side of the file to even out skin. Move the file in a circular motion starting at the heel and work around entire sole of foot. Again, apply only as much pressure as is comfortable and stop if pain or redness occurs.

    • 3). Soak feet in a large basin of warm water to rinse off residue left from filing. After a few minutes of soaking, apply body or foot scrub all over feet, starting with the soles. Get in between toes, tops of feet and ankles. Massage feet in a circular motion to remove any remaining dead skin.

    • 4). Rinse feet clean then pat dry with towel. When feet are clean and dry, massage them with a rich, thick lotion. Some lotions are recommended especially for feet. If you don't have a special foot lotion, body butter is a good substitution.

    • 5). Cover feet with clean cotton socks. The socks will keep your feet clean while the lotion sinks in, and help your feet absorb the lotion better.
