How to Fix a Broken Cord on a Murray Lawn Mower
- 1). Disconnect the spark plug.
- 2). Loosen the three bolts that secure the starter housing to the top of the engine, using a socket set or open-end wrench. Lift the starter housing off the engine, and place it upside-down on a work table.
- 3). Hold the starter housing with one hand, and rotate the pulley in the center of the housing in a counter-clockwise direction with the other hand. When the pulley stops turning, clamp it in place with a pair if wide-jaw vise grip pliers.
- 4). Grasp the knot in the knot hole near the center of the pulley with a pair of needlenose pliers, and pull out the broken starter cord.
- 5). Insert the open end of the new starter cord (with the handle attached to the other end) into the hole in the starter housing. Guide the end of the cord into the pulley and toward the knot hole. When the cord appears in the knot hole, grasp it with a pair of needlenose pliers, and pull out about a foot of slack.
- 6). Tie a firm knot in the end of the starter cord. Singe the remaining end of the cord with a match to keep it from fraying.
- 7). Pull on the cord from outside of the starter housing to firmly seat the knot in the knot hole.
- 8). Release the vise grip pliers, allowing the pulley to rewind the starter cord.
- 9). Replace the starter housing onto the top of the engine, and secure it by tightening the three bolts.
