Megan is spooked by the poltergeist activity in her closet
This experience first happened about May or June of 2014 in my own home, and it still continues to happen fairly frequently. We are located in a medium-sized town in southeastern Iowa, right on the Mississippi. My boyfriend and I have been renting a small, two-bedroom home for nearly a year now.
We'd been living in this house for nearly eight months when I first experienced some sort of supernatural encounter -- I'm not sure what, or who, it is.
It was late in the evening, probably about 9:45, nearing 10 pm., and I was in our bedroom, sitting on the bed, reading. I had my dog lying next to me, asleep. My cats were curled up in their basket, in the living room, asleep.
In our bedroom is a large, walk-in closet that has a light inside of it. It's one of those lights with the exposed bulb and a pull-string switch, kind of like what you'd find in a basement. I like to open the closet and turn on the light inside when I'm reading, as it helps me see better.
So that's the set-up I had that night: closet door wide open with its inside light on, combined with the ceiling lights on in the bedroom as well. I decided I wanted a drink and got up and went to the kitchen. I'd been out of the bedroom maybe all of 20 seconds to grab a class and pour some juice, and just as I was leaving the kitchen, I heard my dog barking. He only barks when he hears something, usually the mailman at the door or if we have unfamiliar guests over, etc. He's a good guard dog.
Of course, I was alarmed as it was late at night and we're in a neighbourhood that isn't as safe as the one we were in before, so I ran into the bedroom. I found our dog standing up on the edge of the bed in a very tense position, with his ears straight up, eyes wide, and head pointing at the closet door the way he does when there's a knock at the front door.
I looked over at the closet door to see what the fuss was about. It was shut. And not only was it shut, I could see from the sizeable space between the bottom of the door and the floor that the light inside had been turned off.
Now, this closet door is very heavy. It's not a sliding door like a lot of closets have; it's an actual wooden, heavy door that is opened by turning the doorknob and pulling. And I'll repeat -- HEAVY. This house was built in 1900, and the doors are of a very, very heavy wood. Also, the doorknob is of the old-fashioned kind with the very big plate and key-hole that looks like a mouth. I have to shut the door hard and turn the knob firmly to get it to latch if I want it to shut... so I know it was not a draft that just blew it shut. And I have to reach up high and pull a chain, which also takes some effort as it's old and hard to pull. I have to really tug on that chain! So, how is the light OFF?
I realized that not only was our dog freaking out and staring at the door as if someone's behind it, the cats ran into the bedroom and planted themselves about three feet in front of the closet door and were also staring at it so intently -- the way they do when they think they hear a mouse or bird in the walls (old house, yeah that happens). They looked as if they were ready to pounce; as if they knew something was in there.
I was terrified because the only logical explanation I had at the moment was that we maybe had a burglar and he'd shut himself in there to hide while I was in the kitchen. I went to my night-stand and grabbed the huge knife I keep in the top drawer for security and took a deep breath and... wrenched open the closet door.
There was nothing in there. I reached in and pulled the chain, turning on the light. Nothing. My cats were hissing now and our dog was growling and looking anxious. I left the door open and the closet light on the rest of the night, and waited for my boyfriend to get home from work.
I told him what happened and he went in the closet... and here's the weird thing.... Usually, people say that when they feel ghosts, it gets very cold. He said it was just blazing hot inside. I went over and felt inside -- and he was right. It's never hot in that closet. We had the air-conditioning running and it's usually kind of chilly and clammy in there. It was like a furnace.
Two days later, the same thing happened. He was at work and I was home alone in the bedroom chatting on facebook on my laptop. The only difference this time is that I witnessed the act itself. I heard the dog start to growl and about one second later I looked up to see the closet door slam shut on its own... and I saw the doorknob TURN -- I kid you not! -- and latch itself! I looked at the space at the bottom of the door where I could see the light inside shining through and then I HEARD THE CHAIN INSIDE PULL, and the light went off!
I didn't dare open it. I sat on the bed with the dog and just shook. I waited for my boyfriend to come home. He did, and I told him again what happened. He ran to it and opened it. Once again, he said it was just swirling with heat inside.
We've had a few other paranormal occurrences in this house, but this is the most frequent. It still happens about once a week, though there was only the one time I actually witnessed it as it was happening. It now only happens when I'm out of the room. I'll either have the closet open with the light inside on and come back into the room to find it turned off and the door shut, or the opposite. I'll actually turn the light off inside and shut the closet door myself, leave the room for a minute and come back to find the door OPEN with the light switched ON!
Whatever it is, it seems to like to let me know it's there by doing the opposite of what I'd already done with the closet. It's very strange, and it creeps out me, my boyfriend, and our pets to no end.
