How to Clean the Coils of a Heat Pump Air Conditioner

    • 1). Turn off the power to the outside heat pump unit. You can disconnect the power at either the air conditioning disconnect located at the outside unit or at the main electrical panel.

    • 2). Sweep away any debris such as leaves and grass from the outside of the heat pump.

    • 3). Remove the outside heat pump cover exposing the coils.

    • 4). Clear away any debris from inside the heat pump. Sweep any trash that has accumulated on the floor inside the unit and make sure any drain areas are clear.

    • 5). Clean the heat pump coils by first using a coil cleaning brush, loosening any dirt that has accumulated on the coils. Continue cleaning, using a general purpose cleaner and a multiuse hose end sprayer, diluting the cleaner using approximately 4 ounces of cleaner to 1 gallon of water.

    • 6). Spray the cleaner in fan spray pattern with a back-and-forth motion from inside the coil. Move the sprayer up and down, spraying through the coils to the outside, moving slowly in order to clean out any remaining dirt from the coils.

    • 7). Rinse the coils in the same manner in which you cleaned them. Empty out the hose spray and rinse until clean, using the fan spray pattern with clear water.

    • 8). Replace the outside cover and turn the power back on to the heat pump.
