South Carolina Minor Laws

    Support

    • Parents must provide financial support to their unmarried minor children. The support must cover the child's necessities and give the child a living standard comparable to that of the parent.

    Contracts

    • Generally, the law does not hold minors responsible for contracts they enter. Minors may be held responsible only for school loans or for contracts to acquire necessities such as food, lodging and clothing.

    Health Decisions

    • A married minor, or the minor's spouse if the minor is disabled, may consent to health procedures provided by licensed practitioners. Any minor who is 16 or older may consent to health services, but medical providers may perform an operation only if it is necessary to the minor's health. The parent of a minor may consent to health services for his child.

    Alcohol Laws

    • Although an 18-year-old is allowed to serve alcohol in South Carolina, the legal age for consuming or pouring alcohol is 21.
