How to Apply for Government Grants for Housing
- 1). Visit the federal government's on-line search engine, Grants.gov, to determine which housing grants are available. Searches can be made by choosing a keyword, a category, or one of the 26 federal grant-making agencies.
- 2). Review the guidelines to determine if you or your organization is eligible for funding. Housing grant opportunities are generally extremely specific, often offering grants to particular low-income regions or communities. If you have any doubts about your eligibility, contact the grant administrator listed by email or phone for help in determining whether or not you should apply.
- 3). Register on the Grants.gov website. Organizations and individuals must register before submitting an application. Step by step instructions are provided in an on-line tutorial.
- 4). Download the housing grant application package associated with the opportunity you plan to pursue. Verify that your version of Adobe is compatible with the Grants.gov software before downloading.
- 5). Fill out the housing grant application as instructed. Take the time to read the instructions completely before beginning and refer to them throughout the process. Complete all sections of the application, because it will not be accepted if any portion is unfinished.
- 6). Ask a colleague or friend to proofread the grant application prior to submission. Several sets of eyes reviewing grant paperwork will insure that your request is clear and that mistakes are eliminated. (Ref 3)
- 7). Submit the housing grant application by uploading it to the Grants.gov website. Review the document once more to verify that all sections uploaded correctly and are complete. Select the "Save & Submit" button to finalize the process.
- 8). Record the confirmation tracking number that appears on the screen once you have successfully submitted your housing grant application. This number will allow you to track the progress of your application.
