How to Answer a Court Judgment

    • 1). Contact clerk's office at the court listed on the summons and inquire about filing fees and business hours.

    • 2). Visit that clerk's office and ask for an "Answer" form. Each court requires a specific format and the clerk's office provides the proper template. Carry the summons as you will need the case number, plaintiff names and addresses listed on the document. The numbered lines correspond with the numbered list of complaints on the summons. Write either "Agree" or "Deny" for each complaint.

    • 3). Ask the clerk's office to file the answer with the court, then ask for two certified copies of the filed document.

    • 4). Mail one copy of the filed answer to the plaintiff listed on the summons. Keep the other copy for your files. Wait for the court to notify you about the hearing date.
