Indiana Teen Driving Laws

    Indiana Learner's Permit

    • Indiana teens may obtain a learner's permit as early as 15 1/2 years old after enrolling in a driver's education course approved by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Learner's permit applicants must provide proof of enrollment in a driver's education program as well as two forms of proof of identity such as Social Security numbers and/or an Indiana Residency Affidavit. Parents of applicants under the age of 18 must submit these items, and if the affidavit is used, it must be signed by a parent, guardian or someone in the same household who is over 18. The person signing the Indiana Residency Affidavit must present two proof of residency documents and two forms of identification, including a valid Indiana driver's license or an identification card.

Teens must take and pass a written multiple choice exam on traffic laws and signs as well as take a vision screening test to see if their vision meets minimal standards or their vision needs to be corrected. For teens under 18, the Indiana teen driving laws require parents or guardians to sign and submit an agreement of financial liability before a learner's permit will be issued.

    Learner's Permit Driving Laws

    • Teens enrolled in driver's training who have been issued a learner's permit may drive only after beginning the training and only in vehicles equipped with dual brake controls with a certified driving instructor sitting in the front passenger seat. These teens may also drive while accompanied by parents or guardians over 21 years of age who have a valid driver's license. The Indiana teen driving laws allow teens between 16 and 18 with learner's permits not enrolled in driver's training to drive only with parents or guardians, and teens over 18 can drive with anyone holding a valid driver's license.

    Probationary Driver's Licenses

    • After driving with a learner's permit for at least six months, Indiana teens who are at least 16 1/2 years and have completed driver's education training can obtain a driver's license. Driver's licenses issued to Indiana teens between the ages of 16 and 17 are considered probationary until they turn 18 years old. Learner's permit holders who have not completed a driver's education program have to be 16 years and 270 days old before they can obtain a driver's license. The license requirements also include having at least 50 hours of driving practice, with at least 10 hours being nighttime driving. These hours must be supervised by a licensed driver at least 25 years old, a licensed instructor or a spouse who is 21 or older. Indiana teens applying for a driver's license must provide proof of identification, take a vision screening test and pass the written and driving skills tests.

Indiana teen driving laws restrict probationary licensed drivers to drive only with parents, guardians or instructors if their are additional passengers in the car for the first 180 days and they cannot drive between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. After 180 days, the hours allowed to drive are increased and Indiana teens may drive anytime they are traveling to work, school or religious events or if accompanied by individuals 25 years or older with valid driver's licenses.
