Depression Can Raise Risk of Heart Disease
It is known that people who are suffering from depression have greater risk of heart disease or cardiac event- a medical term relating to stroke, heart attack, or other sudden heart problem.
A huge amount of evidence suggests that in heart patients, depression is common and it may increase risk of subsequent cardiovascular event.
None have been able to identify the reason behind this but a in the American Medical Association Journal, a new study published on 26th November 2012 suggest the reason.
The results of the study suggest that greater cardiac events risk might be because of behaviors in depression, especially low activity level.
Nevertheless it is quite difficult to get up and work when you feel down. Actually it is also the motivation that is lacked. It's a spiteful circle that can drastically affect your health and reduces chances of betterment. People who are treated for cardiovascular disease understand the importance of being active and how it can affect your recovery.
The study named Heart and Soul study was done in collaboration between, Dr. Mary A. Whooley, researchers from Germany and Netherlands. The study involved 1017 patients suffering from heart diseases. The patients filled out questionnaire called Patient Health Questionnaire to inquire about their depression symptoms. They were also asked regarding their recent activity levels. Of the total subjects 818 didn't have depression symptoms while 199 did have. The ones with symptoms were also found to engage in smoking, being less active and also not taking medications.
Of the participants in the study who suffered depression, 10 percent had cardiac event during 4.8 year period of follow up. The ones who weren't depressed, 6.7 percent had second cardiac event. Cardiac events include stroke, heart attack, heart failure, transient ischemic attack or death.
Even though when statistical tools were used to account other health issues, still 31% under depression were likely to have one more cardiac event. The major finding of study was that physical inactivity was linked to 44 percent higher rate of cardiac event. So now exercise and physical activity might become even more significant part of treatment of both heart problems and depression. So certainly after reading this research you might find the reason that why should you get up and exercise.
The researchers say that, the finding of the study raises the hypothesis that higher cardiovascular event risk linked to the depression can be prevented with modification of behavior specially exercise. Moreover exercise can bring improvement in depressive symptoms and reducing risk of cardiovascular event. The researchers however, draw attention to that it is difficult to tell that where the self-determining effect of cardiac disease end and depression start.
So if you fell that you are depressed and/or you have had any cardiac event or heart attack then this research strongly suggests that if you get active enough you can considerably reduce your risk reiterating that pattern. Discuss your activity level with your doctor. Or if you are under depression can go to counseling or other treatment so that you can get active.
