How to Switch from a Domain to a Workgroup

    Back Up Registry, Documents, Settings and Profiles

    • 1). Open the Start menu. Type “regedit” in the “Search” box. Press “Enter.” Click on the “HKEY_CURRENT_USER” key. Select “Export” from the “File” menu. Save the file to a location other than the desktop or user’s document folder to back up the registry.

    • 2). Open the Start menu. Type “Windows Easy Transfer” in the “Search” box. Press “Enter.” Follow the prompts to transfer the user’s Internet favorites, e-mail, user accounts and documents to a USB flash drive. When prompted to select “Which computer are you using now," select “This is my old computer.”

    • 3). Open the Start menu. Type "Windows Explorer." Press "Enter." Open the "Organize" drop-down menu. Select "Folder and Search Options." Go to the "View" tab. Click "Show hidden files, folders and drives." Click "OK."

    • 4). Navigate to C:\Users\NAME\Ntuser.dat. Copy the Ntuser.dat file to a location other than the desktop or user’s document folder to back up the user’s profile settings.

    Switch from Domain to Workgroup

    • 1). Log in to the computer using an account with administrator rights. Open the Start menu. Right-click “Computer.” Select “Properties” from the shortcut menu.

    • 2). Click “Change Settings” in the “Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings” section.

    • 3). Go to the “Computer Name” tab. Click “Change.” The “Computer Name/Domain Changes” dialog box will open.

    • 4). Type the name you want to use for the computer in the “Computer name” box. Click the “Workgroup” radio button. Click “OK.”

    • 5). Restart the computer.
