How to Care for an Oro Verde Orchid
- 1). Plant the Oro Verde orchid into a pot that has drainage holes in the bottom of it to allow excess water to run out. In addition, a one inch layer of rocks or stones placed into the bottom of the container will protect the plant's roots from excess water. Fill the pot with sphagnum moss rather than potting soil, since orchids are air plants that do not require soil.
- 2). Water the plants heavily until water runs out of the bottom of the container. Watering should be done any time the top of the moss feels dry, usually at least once per week during the growing season. Once the plant dies back for the winter, watering is only required once every 2 to 3 weeks.
- 3). Fertilize the Oro Verde orchid once per week during the blooming season. Purchase a liquid based fertilizer that is specially formulated for orchids and apply it using the manufacturer's instructions.
- 4). Insert tall flower stakes into the soil approximately one inch away from the base of the plant. When the orchid stems reach between 4 to 6 inches tall, tie the stems loosely to the stake using twine or string.
- 5). Place the Oro Verde orchid in an area that receives a lot of sunlight. Near a window, in a greenhouse, or in a glass enclosed room is the ideal location for these plants.
- 6). Maintain an air temperature of between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. A thermometer placed near the orchid will help to monitor the air temperature.
