DIY Closet Customization
- 1). Work with the space you have. For example, if you have a closet with high ceilings, use brackets and wood to make shelves above your clothes-hanging bar. Such shelving can hold boxes of costumes, winter or summer shoes and clothes, as well as any other storage uses you may have for it.
- 2). Mount hanging storage units, such as shoe racks, to the inside of the closet door. Another option is to use hooks with adhesive backs to create space on the inside of your door for hanging belts, really long necklaces and scarves. You can also hammer nails into unused areas of the closet walls for belts and scarves.
- 3). Don't forget about decor: try emptying your entire closet in order to go through everything to find out what to give away or donate. Once your closet is empty, take the opportunity to paint the closet a vibrant new color, or to add patterns and designs to the walls with paint or decal stickers. You can also use paint to designate certain areas in your closet, such as writing "Summer Dresses" on the wall over that type of clothes, as well as "Winter Clothes," "Shoe Area," etc.
- 4). Add other storage pieces to your closet if applicable, such as old bookshelves, clear plastic storage bins, laundry baskets, small stools or anything else that can fit in your closet and work as a storage piece. Paint and decorate such items as desired to match the paint used in your closet.
