Most Popular Apps of 2014
Although there are no combined reports of the most popular app across every platform out there, I have created this list based on a year round trend of the most talked about apps for smartphones and tablets.
First off, the most popular app is definitely Facebook. The social media giant has always had a great impact with its apps on the App Store and Play Store alike. In spite of failed attempts on various new apps, Facebook continues to top the list with its main app, along with the equally popular Messenger app. This year November, Facebook released a new app called Rooms, which did not gain widespread popularity. Despite that, it continues to top the charts.
Usually, smartphone games have a trend of topping charts every year. On previous years, it has been Temple Run and before that, there was Angry Bird. However, this year's most popular game was Candy Crush Saga, no wonder. Actively played my millions of people, Candy Crush Saga is a game that requires patience and requires making smart moves. The game spread widespread popularity during its early stages and continues to hold on to that.
In the Entertainment category, Netflix tops the chart this year.
Netflix was most downloaded among the entertainment category. Also, this does not come as a surprise considering how popular the service is in the US. Despite not providing its services worldwide, Netflix remains on top of the list.
In the Music category, the most popular app is Pandora. Yes, it's not Spotify. Although, Spotify has been trending a lot this year, Pandora seems to be a public favorite. What's surprising though, is that the most popular Photography app is Flipagram, not Instagram. Despite growing popularity of the already popular Instagram app, it was not the most downloaded app this year.
And if you're interested in travelling, you should know that the most popular app in the travel category is TripAdvisor, which was quite anticipated. Oh, in case you're wondering, the fastest growing category of this year is health and fitness. With all the health and fitness wearable devices coming out this year, this category is growing faster than any other. And the most popular app on this category is MyFitnessPal.
More or less, these are the most popular apps this year, based on most downloaded and most trending throughout the year. Other popular apps were Snapchat, Clash of Clans, Farm Heroes Saga, Don't Tap the White Tile, Subway Surfer etc. There has also been a rise in e-book downloads, compared to any previous year. Which means, more people are embracing e-books compared to regular printed books. There has also been a rise in soundtrack downloads in the music category. The apps that lost popularity compared to previous years are Temple Run, Temple Run 2, Angry Birds, Flappy Bird (which was a one-time hit). Snapchat is one of the fastest growing Social app out there, reportedly having more users than Twitter and Instagram. WhatsApp continues to be popular in terms of number of downloads and active users, but still not enough to beat bigger rival Snapchat.
