The Importance of Joinery Experts

Wood has been used as a building material for thousands of years. It is extremely versatile, eco-friendly, and has never gone out of fashion. Wherever woodwork is used in a building project, its quality will affect the finish of the whole job. This is why it's so important to check that any building company you engage includes a joinery expert.

Other tradesmen such as plumbers or electricians sometimes offer to ‘have a go' at the woodwork to save bringing in someone else, but if you want a professional job done you'll need a professional joiner. Here are some examples of the differences a trained and experienced joiner can make:

Internal doors

One problem with buying ready-made doors is that they come in a limited range of styles and woods. Another problem is that fitting them is rarely as simple as it seems. They should be snug enough to stop draughts, yet open smoothly without rubbing carpets or other floor coverings. Mass-produced doors come in standard sizes, but even if they are to be hung in standard size frames they usually need to be trimmed. In older houses, where door frames might not be exactly square, this trimming process is even trickier, especially if the door is hollow with only a narrow rim of solid wood. If too much is cut off, the door is ruined.

A qualified joiner makes his own doors – and frames if necessary – from solid timber. He will be able to give you a new door that exactly matches others in your home or use your own design ideas if you want something different. Whatever type of door you choose, you can be sure it will fit perfectly.

External doors

Even more care should be taken in choosing and fitting external doors as they must keep out wind, rain and intruders. A professional joiner will know how to select the best wood for the job and construct a strong door that will stand up to the elements for many years.

If your home is listed or in a conservation area, a new front door will probably need to be a good copy of the original door. This will be no problem for a joiner who is familiar with traditional carpentry skills and designs.

A solid front door will deter burglars, but what about your back or side doors? They might not need to be completely replaced, but if they're starting to show their age an experienced joiner will be able to refurbish and strengthen them.

Staircases

A staircase should be more than just a means of getting from one floor to another. Depending on its position and style, a well-built staircase can enhance the character of your home or even be a stunning design feature in its own right. Basic staircases can be bought ready-made, but if you want one with curves, complicated turns, or it needs to be fitted into a confined space, it's best to have it custom made by an expert.

A joiner experienced in working on all types of staircases is also the person to call in if your old staircase squeaks and creaks and feels shaky. He will be able to find the source of the problems, solve them, and give your staircase a new lease of life.

If you are having a new house or extension built, or you plan to renovate or alter an existing property, you'll need the services of a reputable, professional building company. Not sure which one to choose? Look for one that employs its own in-house joinery expert.
