Art of Movie Making - Singapore International Film Festival
Started in 1987 the Singapore International Film Festival is an important regional event that showcases important cinematic works from the Asian region and the world. Long established goals of the festival have been to develop a Singaporean film culture, enable audiences to view non commercial films, showcase Asian cinema and to develop techniques of film making. Over the years the festival has also strived to include films from as many genres from as many countries as possible to showcase different themes, social concerns, new ideas and formats. The ten day event is a boon to local and Asian film makers wishing to break into the business and allows international and local film makers to display some of their groundbreaking work.
The Festival which is currently in its 24th year is aiming to broaden its appeal with a bigger selection of films that would connect with a larger Asian and international audience. To be held from the 15th to 25th September, this year's selections include movies from China, Singapore, Taiwan, USA, France, Italy, Belgium, Japan, South Korea, UK, Uruguay, Vietnam, Canada, Hong Kong, Iran, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Russia, Bulgaria, Sweden, Jordan, Thailand, Germany, Mexico, Israel, New Zealand, Norway, Congo, Azerbaijan, Finland, Brazil, Denmark, Netherlands and India. One hundred and forty four feature films are expected to be shown this year. Short films and animations will also be featured, some of which will be shown in Asia for the very first time.
The festival comprises of sixteen segments dedicated to areas such as Singaporean films, dramas, comedy, action, history / culture, suspense and horror, experimental movies, animation, musicals, Australian movies, documentaries and a special segment featuring snippets from 3D films, Art House films, contemporary vampire movies, works of well known directors and movie makers. There will also be a series of workshops for aspiring film makers including a class in film making.
The festival's special awards, the Silver Screen Awards will be given in recognition of Asian feature films and Singaporean short films.
