Instructions on How to Fit a Car Seat Base

    Seat Belt Installation

    • 1). Place the car seat base in the back seat of your vehicle. Ensure that it is rear-facing. AAP suggests infants ride rear-facing the day you bring them home from the hospital until--at a minimum--they are one years old and 20 pounds.

    • 2). Guide the seat belt through the openings at the bottom of the car seat base. Buckle the seat belt.

    • 3). Place your knee in the center of the base for additional power and leverage as you tighten the seat belt. Graco, a maker of child passenger restraint systems, advises consulting your vehicle owner's manual for seat belt instructions.

    • 4). Insert the infant seat into its base. Make sure it is secured by pulling on it after the connection between the seat and base is made.

    LATCH Installation

    • 1). Set the base, rear-facing, in your vehicle's back seat. Locate the LATCH belt that comes with your infant car seat base. Thread the LATCH belt through the openings at the bottom of the car seat base.

    • 2). Hook the connectors on the LATCH belt to the LATCH anchors located in the space where the top of the back seat meets the bottom of the back set. LATCH anchors are metal hooks that you can locate by placing your fingers in this crease.

    • 3). Place your knee in the center of the car seat base. Tighten the LATCH belt by pulling on the adjustment belt. You tighten the LATCH belt the same way as you would an airline seat belt, except, in this case, you are standing over it and pulling up on the strap.

    • 4). Secure the infant seat to the base. Listen for a "click" to make sure the seat has engaged the base. Pull on the seat to ensure that it is properly connected.
