How to Care for Stainless Grill Grates

    • 1). Scrub the grill grate with a wire-bristled grill brush. If the grate is still warm from cooking, it will be easier to scrape the food residue away. Allow the grate to cool enough to touch it comfortably.

    • 2). Soak the grate in a mixture of equal amounts of water and white vinegar to remove stubborn bits of food. Let the grate soak for up to 30 minutes.

    • 3). Rinse the grate well in fresh water and scrub again with the wire-bristled brush. Once all of the food particles are removed, blot the grate dry with a paper towel.

    • 4). Add a small amount of vegetable oil to a clean paper towel and wipe the top, bottom and sides of the grate until it is coated in a light layer of oil. The thin coating of oil helps to protect the grate from rust and pitting.

    • 5). Replace the grate back on the grill and close the lid. If you have a grill cover, replace that as soon as the grill is cool enough.
