How to Become a Police Officer in Milwaukee
- 1). Earn your high school diploma or GED.
- 2). Visit the Milwaukee police station, and pick up an application form for employment as a police officer. Fill out the application, and return it to your nearest police district office. After reviewing your application, the police department will contact you and schedule a written examination.
- 3). Take the written exam. The written exam has three parts: a standard exam that tests your reasoning, memory and visualization skills, a questionnaire to determine your work style and a life experience survey. The standard exam contains approximately 75 multiple choice questions. For example, to assess your memorization ability, the test may require you to examine a picture for several minutes and then answer questions about the picture without referring back to it. Candidates have two hours and 30 minutes to complete this portion of the exam.
The work style questionnaire requires that you read a series of statements and indicate how strongly you either agree or disagree with the statement on your answer sheet. The life experience survey contains short statements that require you to select the multiple choice answer that best suits your past experience. - 4). Pass the Milwaukee police department's physical aptitude examination. During the physical aptitude test, you must perform physical activities that you would encounter while on the job. For example, the physical aptitude test includes a "dummy drag" to test your strength. This test simulates dragging an unconscious individual away from danger. The physical aptitude test also includes a 1.5-mile run to test your endurance.
- 5). Complete a personal history questionnaire, and consent to a background check. The Milwaukee police department uses your answers on the questionnaire to conduct a thorough review of your background by reviewing your credit and employment history and conducting a search for previous arrest records.
- 6). Pass the police department's medical examination. The medical examination includes blood tests for communicable diseases, a vision and hearing test, and a drug screen.
- 7). Agree to a psychological evaluation. This helps the Milwaukee police department hire only psychologically sound individuals who do not have mental and emotional difficulties that could endanger their safety or the safety of others in the field.
