How to Get a Building Permit for a Home

    • 1). Choose a house plan. Make sure that it conforms to the codes of your individual neighborhood. Some residential developments require specific qualifications to be a part of the neighborhood, such as a certain square footage, two-stories, attached garage, or other qualifications.

    • 2). Apply for a permit. Contact your municipal housing authority to obtain the initial application packet. It is a good idea to obtain this information before setting a firm starting date on the construction of your home.

    • 3). Submit the application. In order to properly submit your building permit application, you must have an architect-approved house plan showing the structure's elevation, survey map of property, soil permit (if needed) and construction budget.

    • 4). Follow up. To expedite the permit application, it is wise to call the housing authority frequently. By following this procedure, you can quickly find out if any additional information is needed.

    • 5). Hang the permit. Do not allow construction to begin before you have paid for the permit fee and the document is displayed on the construction site. If construction is started before the fee is paid, you may face a fine.
