Fall Lawn Care for St. Augustine Grass

    • 1). Reduce the mowing frequency to every 10 to 14 days during the fall. Raise the blade of the mower to cut St. Augustine grass at a height of 3 inches.

    • 2). Apply a nitrogen-rich lawn fertilizer every 60 days in the fall. Apply 1 lb. of the fertilizer per 1,000 square feet of lawn. Follow the application instructions on the fertilizer package. Granular or liquid fertilizers are both acceptable.

    • 3). Water St. Augustine grass only if conditions are dry for more than one to two weeks. Signs that the grass needs watering include wilting or curling leaves. When these conditions or symptoms occur, water the grass until the soil is moist to the touch.

    • 4). Monitor the grass throughout the fall for crabgrass invasion or dead patches of grass, which indicate a grub infestation. If you notice these signs, you will need to apply the appropriate insecticides or herbicides in the spring.
