How to Change the Color of a Leather Chair

    • 1). Select a leather re-coloring kit. Most kits come with multiple color selections, leather prep, finishing sprays, a spray unit, gloves and sponge applicators. Make sure your kit has the color you desire. The kits usually come with small portions of colors meant to match the existing color of your current leather. If you are changing the color of your leather, you might need enough for multiple layers. If so, select your color, and purchase an additional bottle of color.

    • 2). Cover your work area. Use newspaper, a sheet or plastic covering to protect other furniture and items from exposure to chemicals.

    • 3). Prep your chair by removing existing color. Using the sponge, apply prep solution onto the leather and rub it in with an abrasive pad. The leather prep cleaner is used to remove the manufacturer's finish as well as dirt, and de-greases the leather so the new color can fully penetrate. Not prepping your leather will cause adhesion problems. Continue this process until you start to see the color lifting from the leather, exposing the color beneath. You will also see excess color on your abrasive pad.

    • 4). Add a thin layer of color to your leather with a different application sponge, and apply it in smooth, even strokes. Applying the color too thick will cause bubbles and runs. If you notice this, take a cloth and immediately smooth the surface. Allow the layer to dry. Repeat this step by applying additional layers until the desired color is achieved.

    • 5). Attach the spray unit to the color pick-up tube to apply the spray layer. Hold the spray about 6 to 8 inches from the surface, and evenly apply a thin layer of color.

    • 6). Apply a thin layer of finishing spray. Wait until the color has completely dried, and spray your furniture.

    • 7). Allow the spray to dry. Wait approximately 48 hours before disturbing your chair.
