How to Recycle AAA Batteries

    • 1). Contact your local government's health, solid waste or recycling department to verify disposal requirements and regulations. Websites such as Earth911.com can help you locate your local recycling centers. Most municipal recycling centers are for residents of that municipality only, so you may need to provide proof of residency. There are some programs available in certain locations that offer curbside recycling for batteries to make proper disposal even easier.

    • 2). Contact local or chain electronics retailers. In many cities, there are retailers that will recycle batteries or dispose of them safely without charge. For example, RadioShack, The Home Depot, Best Buy and Office Depot typically accept batteries for recycling, even if they were not purchased at that particular store.

    • 3). Inspect the used batteries to determine whether or not they have corroded. If there are any signs of damage to the battery itself, such as powder or liquid on the outside, wear gloves when handling them and wash your hands thoroughly when you are finished with them.

    • 4). Drop off the AAA batteries at a retailer or a recycling center per the individual collector's requirements. Some retail locations offer an easy-to-use kiosk for disposal.
