How to Make an Inner Leg Gusset on a Diaper

    • 1). Choose a cloth diaper pattern. You can find free cloth diaper patterns on the Internet, or you can create your own.

    • 2). Cut out your diaper pieces. Diaper patterns are a single shape, and many patterns require that you cut out several identical layers to be sewn together. Do not sew the layers together yet.

    • 3). Lay one of the diaper pieces out flat, and measure the middle narrow portion of the diaper. This is the area that that wraps around the legs when the diaper is on the baby. This is where the gusset goes.

    • 4). Cut two strips of fabric with the height of your previous measurement and a width of 2 inches.

    • 5). Sew the two strips of fabric right sides together on one of the long sides. Sew with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

    • 6). Turn the fabric strips right side out and sew another straight line about three-eighths of an inch from the first stitched line. This will be a casing for your elastic.

    • 7). Thread elastic through the casing and stitch it to the fabric at both ends. If you want the fabric to gather a lot, use a shorter length of elastic. For instance, if you child has particularly skinny legs, you will want to use a shorter length of elastic.

    • 8). Pin the unsewn side of the gusset to the diaper on one of the inner layers of the unassembled diaper. It will be curvy because of the elastic, but pin it as best as you can, or snip at the corners to allow the fabric to bend a bit.

    • 9). Sew the gusset to the diaper layer.

Finish sewing the diaper as your pattern instructs.
