How to Explain to Children That Someone Has Died

    • 1). Tell your children you need to talk to them about something serious and that you have some bad news. Do this as soon as you can to prevent the children from hearing the news from someone else.

    • 2). Explain that the person has died. Say this simply, and be straightforward. Make sure the children understand that the person who has died is gone. Confusing language can complicate things for the child. Do not say anything vague like, "Grandma went to sleep."

    • 3). Discuss what will happen to this person according to your faith and beliefs. For example, if you and your children are Christian, explain that the person who died will go to Heaven.

    • 4). Fill the children in on what you and the family will do for a funeral, burial and/or memorial service. Explain what these ceremonies are and why they are taking place. Tell the children what they are expected to do during these times. Ask them if they would like to attend the services.

    • 5). Tell the children how you feel. Tell them you are sad or angry or any other feelings you might have and why you are feeling them. This can open the doors for your children to also express their feelings and allow them to realize it is acceptable and normal to do so.

    • 6). Ask your children how they feel. Tell them you want them to talk to you about how they feel and that you will answer any questions they have.

    • 7). Hug your children and comfort them.
